The recycling centre of the future is a hot spot for people to meet

In October, a new recycling centre and meeting place was set up as a temporary pop-up in Stockholm Royal Seaport. Here you could bring used clothes, toys, bikes and other stuff for exchange, reuse, repurposing and recycling.

You could find tools to repair your bike or rebuild your furniture, have a traditional Swedish “fika” (coffee with sweet bread) and speak with experts on sustainability and recycling.

The pop-up recycling centre is the first of it’s kind in Sweden, and a cooperative project with White architects and Ragn-Sells.

Much of what is thrown away in Sweden could be of use to others. The goal of the project was to increase awareness and interest in more efficient resource management.

– We have to get better at reusing our stuff. To make recycling more interesting and fun, new concepts has to be developed. Through an innovation procurement it was possible to think outside the box and invite actors that usually don’t work with waste disposal, says Katarina Luhr, Vice Mayor of Environment, City of Stockholm.
