The new Nobel Center in Stockholm

The City of Stockholm and Nobelhuset AB are planning to build a new Nobel Center on the small island of Blasieholmen, a location in the very heart of Stockholm. The new Nobel Center will be superbly equipped to receive the great number of visitors the museum has each year, as well as displaying existing and future Nobel Prize winners’ achievements to the general public. The new Nobel Center will be an important symbol that presents Stockholm and Sweden as the home of the Nobel Prize. The Nobel Center is expected to open its doors to the public on Blasieholmen in 2019.

The current Nobel Museum in the Old Town attracts over 160 000 Swedish and international visitors each year. But the current location has for a long time been too small and substandard and cannot accommodate all visiting school classes. The plot on Blasieholmen is one of the last remaining undeveloped building sites and has been saved for a prestigious building such as the new Nobel museum.

The new Nobel Center is planned to contain facilities for exhibitons, scientific conferences and facilities for research, as well as a library, restaurant, café and shop. The building is planned to be 26 000 square metres.

During December 2011 the city of Stockholm and the Nobel Foundation signed a declaration of intent to jointly promote the construction of a new Nobel Center on Blasieholmen in Nybroviken, Stockholm.  An international architectural competition was announced in May 2013 regarding the building's configuration. Eleven proposals were presented in October 2013, and the winning entry was chosen in April 2014; David Chipperfield & Christoph Felger from David Chipperfield Architects Berlin won the hearts of the unanimous jury.

During the first quarter of 2015, the City of Stockholm will put the plans for the Nobel Center on public display; an opportunity for the general public and interested parties to give their opinion on the project. Construction is planned to start in 2016 and finish in 2019.
